The psychology of the electric car: Experiences of drivers from electric vehicle trials
Organizadores: Mark Burgess; Joseph Krems; Andreas Keinath
Referência: 2013, 224p., Psychology Press
Descrição: In a world where we are increasingly feeling the pressure to be environmentally aware more and more people are turning to environmentally friendly modes or transport, including the Electric Car. This book is the first publication to comprehensively examine empirical evidence relating to people’s sustained experiences of driving electric vehicles (EVs) and integrating them into their daily lives. Previous books have addressed the technical characteristics and performance of EVs and their component parts, how policy influences technological innovation pertaining to EVs and the commercial and political barriers to EV adoption, but this is the first to examine the psychological impact that electric vehicles have on the individual driver. This book brings together international contributors from the UK, Germany and the USA to discuss psychological findings from electric car studies, including the BMW Mini E trials, the largest of their kind in the world. The book discusses driver experiences including charging, regenerative braking and low vehicle noise, as well as attitudes towards the electric vehicle, and challenges to the current stereotypes. Empirical data is analysed throughout by established psychologists and representatives from the car manufacturing industry making this an essential resource for anyone wanting to gauge the psychological impact of the electric car including researchers and academics in the field of social and transport psychology, environmentalists and government agencies and policy makers.

Advances in Traffic Psychology

Advances in Traffic Psychology
Mark Sullman; Lisa Dorn
Referência: 2012, 330 p., Ashgate
Descrição: Traffic psychology is a rapidly expanding and broad field within applied psychology with a considerable volume of research activities and a growing network of academic strands of enquiry. The discipline primarily focuses on the behaviour of road users and the psychological processes underlying these behaviours, looking at issues such as cognition, distraction, fatigue, personality and social aspects, often delivering practical applications and educational interventions. Traffic psychology has been the focus of research for almost as long as the motor car has been in existence and was first recognised as a discipline in 1990 when the International Association of Applied Psychology formed Division 13: Traffic and Transportation Psychology. The benefits of understanding traffic psychology are being increasingly recognised by a whole host of organisations keen to improve road safety or minimise health and safety risks when travelling in vehicles. The objective of this volume is to describe and discuss recent advances in the study of traffic psychology, with a major focus on how the field contributes to the understanding of at-risk road-user behaviour. The intended readerships include road-safety researchers from a variety of different academic backgrounds, senior practitioners in the field including regulatory authorities, the private and public sector personnel, and vehicle manufacturers concerned with improving road safety.
Observação: O sumário e o capítulo 1 (Driven by anger: The causes and consequences of anger during virtual journeys) estão disponíveis gratuitamente online.

Psychology and Industrial Efficiency (livro disponível online)
Autor: Hugo Münsterberg
Referência: 1913, p. 344, University Press Cambridge
Descrição: In this book Münsterberg addressed many different topics that are very important to the current field of industrial psychology. His objective was "to sketch the outlines of a new science which is to intermediate between the modern laboratory psychology and the problems of economics: the psychological experiment is systematically to be placed at the service of commerce and industry." He selects three points of view that he believes are of particular importance to industrial psychology and seeks to answer those questions. These three questions include "how we can find the men whose mental qualities make them best fitted for the work which they have to do; secondly, under what psychological conditions we can secure the greatest and most satisfactory output of work from every man; and finally, how we can produce most completely the influences on human minds which are desired in the interest of business." In other words, we ask how to find "the best possible man, how to produce the best possible work, and how to secure the best possible effects."

Overcoming the trauma of your motor vehicle accident: A cognitive-behavioral treatment program (therapist guide)

Overcoming the trauma of your motor vehicle accident: A cognitive-behavioral treatment program (therapist guide) (Livro disponível online parcialmente)
Autores: Edward J. Hickling; Edward B. Blanchard
Referência: 2006, 104 p., Oxford University Press
Descrição: Motor vehicle accidents account for over 3 million injuries annually and are one of the most common traumas individuals experience. But the physical injuries are often less impactful in the long run than the severe emotional distress, flashbacks, and substantial impairment in work or family life. Studies of the general population have found that approximately 9% of people who survivor an accident develop Posttraumatic Stress Disorder. And yet, few people seek treatment immediately, mostly because they are not aware of the nature of their condition or that successful brief treatments are available.
Written by the creators of an empirically supported cognitive-behavioral therapy program developed at The Center for Stress and Anxiety Disorders in Albany, this therapist guide includes all the information and materials necessary to implement a successful program for treating accident-related PTSD. The therapeutic technique described in this book is research-based with a proven success rate.
The renowned authors provide clinicians with step-by-step instructions for teaching their clients important skills that have been scientifically tested and shown to be effective in treating emotional trauma caused by involvement in a car accident. Designed to be used in conjunction with its corresponding workbook, this therapist guide outlines a treatment program that includes cognitive restructuring, relaxation techniques, and exposure exercises. User-friendly and comprehensive, Overcoming the Trauma of Your Motor-Vehicle Accident, Therapist Guide is a resource that no clinician can do without.
